Three years ago, Rob saw a slogan on a t-shirt that changed his life.
I’ve Been to the Future. We Won.
Worn by a young woman at a Black Lives Matter protest it shifted his thinking about how to inspire change. What if the principal purpose of social and environmental justice movements became the cultivation of longing for this future?
When we live in a time in which the future is being cancelled and colonised, the very act of reconnecting people to the future, helping them to fall in love with its possibilities, is one of the most important and radical things we can do.
This event takes the form of an invitation to wonder:
If we were to mobilise the collective ability to cultivate longing that is present in the room, harnessing a sense of urgency alongside joyful potential, what could we create? How can we become more playful with time and possibility, better at drawing the future we long for into the present, and making it real for people?
As one of Bristol’s creative freethinkers this is a conversation that needs you to be a part of it, but places are limited!

WHAT TO EXPECT
Over a couple of hours Rob will unveil stories and invite discussion to inspire a new kind of visionary activism, one that enables people To Fall in Love with the Future. Time-travelling together we will explore how artists and creatives are key to unlocking society’s willingness to reimagine and build a future we would be proud to pass on to future generations.
Rob will be joined by a couple of guests at the start to help give context to the worlds he is describing and the urgent steps needed to get from one to another:
- One of the Uks leading climate scientists (Rob Hopkins is just confirming) who will give a short introduction to the current state we are in and how it is still entirely possible to keep global temperatures between 1.5 and 2% if we act now.
- Jo Hook will briefly describe the impact of climate change, right now, on the ground in Malawi. As Temwa UK’s MD and co-founder she will highlight the need to centre justice in our transition to a low-carbon future, and the work Temwa is doing to get there.
Doors will open at 1.30 and you are invited to arrive early enough to get a drink and find a good seat. We are very grateful to Arc (Sober) Bar and Arc Bristol Radio for providing their venue and tech services for free – they will be open after the event for you to carry on your conversations and to make new connections. Please support this pioneering, independent venue by buying a drink or two while you are there!
Spaces are limited, so get your ticket ASAP.

Rob’s work is all about changing the narrative from a polarising fear of collapse to a deep and hopeful commitment to building thriving, resilient communities – a future which is entirely possible and within our grasp.
Rob knows that it’s the poets, street artists, storytellers, video game designers and freethinkers who can reframe the future and catalyse the cultural shift needed to inspire action – which is why he wanted to speak directly to Bristol’s creative community at this event.
