Climb for Community
In 2021, take on a virtual challenge to climb the height of Kilimanjaro whilst raising money for Temwa’s community-led projects in Malawi. Keep active and focus on something positive during this lockdown we’re all facing.
Across the border from Malawi in Tanzania, sits the world’s tallest free-standing mountain at 19,340 feet tall – Mount Kilimanjaro. Each year around 35,000 people attempt to climb it and in 2014, a group of Temwa supporters climbed the snow-capped peak and raised thousands of pounds to fund Temwa’s work in Nkhata Bay North.
These days with the impact of Covid it is of course almost impossible to take on this feat, but it’s also hard to stay fit and active, especially if you’re having to self isolate or work from home. So in 2021, we’re bringing the Climb for Community challenge to you.
You can complete this challenge in your home (or at your office if you can do so safely) using your stairs, or even go outdoors in the fresh air and use a nearby hill or beauty spot that involves a climb.
The average height of a staircase in a UK home is 7.87ft, so we’ve worked out you would need to climb your stairs 2,457 times to complete the challenge. If your home or office stairs are different, or if you are doing the challenge outdoors, you can just divide the total footage of the mountain by the height of your stairs/hill (in feet) and that will tell you how many times you will need to climb it.

Tried and Tested
Earlier this year, Lisa Cadd, her kids, and the Year 6 class at Westbury on Trym Academy in Bristol took on an epic challenge for Temwa. After being told to isolate because of COVID cases at their school, half term plans for Lisa and the children went out the window. But instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they decided to do something AMAZING! Check out how they got on…

How will your Fundraising help?
Temwa works in Nkhata Bay North, a rural and hard to reach area of northern Malawi, where 40% of the population live on less than £1 a day. Temwa works on projects which include health and sanitation, reforestation, agriculture, and education.
Temwa’s Bursary Programme and the Nick Webber Trust
Thabu Msuku is a final-year boarding school student at Bandawe secondary school who wants to be a Field Officer when she graduates this year. She has the highest mark in her Agriculture Class, so she’s on track to achieve her dream.
With support from Temwa and Nick Webber Trust, Thabu turned her academic performance around in the second term of her final year at school. She moved up 65 places to become the 21st highest performing student in her year. Your support can contribute towards programmes like the Bursary scheme which help young Malawians gain a high-quality education.
