Education is one of the exciting things growing in Malawi this spring. In our communities, Temwa aims to give every child the opportunity to have an education, to attend school, and learn how to read.

Updates from Malawi

The rise of the reading camp

A major success from the last year and from March 2019 is the formation of four new reading camps! These camps provide flexible after-school literacy support to vulnerable children and give them opportunities to read after class hours. We have trained eight mentors to support over 200 vulnerable children to read. These kind, individuals volunteer their time to give children the best tools and the hope to succeed in the future.

In March, we supported two literacy fair events with competitions, spelling demonstrations and prizes. Over 1,000 people attended!

Our students in Chikwina and  Mzgola revelled in this fun-packed of day educational activities, where they got to showcase their ever-improving English skills; letter recognition, reading words and sentences, and participating in demonstration lessons.

To motivate the students, Temwa supported the events with prizes (schoolbags, notebooks, pens and pencil cases) for those with the best performance. Community spirit runs far and wide in these images of children, school staff and parents who joined in.

Building the foundation for an education

The roofing for girls’ sanitary facilities and hostel is finished! We are excited for the hostel to soon be completed and open as it will help address the challenges girls face – from self-boarding or walking long distances – to attend school and in turn, learn to read.

You can enable this work to continue.

You can give monthly or take part in one of our tantalising challenges and events. Join an adventure below:

Every year we ‘wheely’ look forward to our cycle challenge event.
This September, we will be cycling from Bangor to Bristol, enjoying views of epic Snowdonia, the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons as we go!

Two of our team, Becky and Rob, are putting their pedals where their fundraising plans are, join them on this exhilarating challenge. Spaces are limited, find out more and sign up yourself  or a group now! Nothing says building team spirit and lasting friendships than spurring each other up seemingly vertical gradients.

#ArtForAfrica is back and this time it’s going viral!
In true Glasto fashion, 2019 represents a fallow year for A4A’s live auction. Fear not, it’s going online – giving artists the opportunity to showcase more of their work and giving you the opportunity to buy art from wherever you are, whenever suits you, throughout June. Too good to be true? Find out more.
We love to share how your support and the determination of communities in Malawi is bringing about sustainable change. You’ll hear about inspiring breakthroughs, appeals and more about how you can get involved. You also don’t want to miss out on the excellent choice of Dad jokes and top puns featured throughout.

Volunteer with Temwa at some of the UK’s top festivals this summer.
Every year our volunteers come back happy (and a little sleepy) – after enjoying world-class artists and making incredible friendships as they volunteer on our stands and share the hope of our projects at UK Festivals. We’d love your help on info points, lost and found, and phone charging stations. Places are limited, get signed up for an unforgettable summer!
