The 22nd March is World Water Day – an international day to celebrate water and raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water around the world. So this year, to celebrate, we are challenging you to take on Temwa’s Parched March Challenge and drink only water for the month of March and help raise vital funds to enable communities in Nkhata Bay North to access safe, clean drinking water.
Thirsty for change and a challenge?
Then – join the Temwa Parched March Team and commit to a month of nothing but water!!
That’s right, no coffee, no tea, no juice, no alcohol…just WATER!
Challenge yourself. Raise funds. Transform lives.
When: 1st March – 31st March 2019
How: Drink only water throughout the month. Just water. Nothing else.
Who: Anyone, Any Age, Anywhere!
Sponsorship Target: There is no minimum target but why not aim to raise £155 which is only £5 per day
Can’t beat that coffee addiction? You can still be part of the campaign by donating directly to give a community access to safe water. The problem…
In northern Malawi, many people have to resort to drinking and washing in dirty water. This water often leads to preventable illnesses such as diarrhoea, bilharzia and cholera, which can be deadly if left untreated. Limited access to healthcare in the remote villages of Nkhata Bay North means many people go untreated.
Since Temwa launched our Water Filter Project in 2017, illnesses from waterborne diseases have reduced by 85% in the participating five villages, but dirty water and poor hygiene remain 2 of the world’s biggest killers in the world’s poorest communities. Covid-19 has only made combating them harder. The threat of Covid-19 in Malawi makes clean water all the more important so that community members can safely wash their hands and reduce the spread of the virus.
Temwa has already made huge gains in providing clean water to communities but there’s still a long way to go and we need your help. Working with communities, in 2021 we will train 300 families in two new villages in water safety and sanitation. A total of 1,800 community members will benefit from water filters which transform contaminated water into safe, clean drinking water.
