In 1999, Enwood Mynyenyembe from the Katayila village, quit his job as a Veterinary Officer and bought a cow, so it could produce milk to help his income. Overtime Mr Myneyenyembe got 5 more cows and became a supplier of Chipunga dairy.
In 2015 the dairy closed and he opened a 15 hectare farm, where he grew bananas and maize to sell. Yet, due to the price of fertilisers and farm inputs, he was limited to only using 2.5 acres.
Mr Mynyenyembe noticed that his neighbour, Lucia, who is a member of the Tigwilizane Farmer Field School, practised different sustainable agriculture practices and her crops were healthier. From this, Enwood asked Lucia to train him with what Temwa had taught her. Through this advice, Mr Mynyenyembe ventured into cassava and yam production, selling for K10,00 per tin. So far he has made K180,000, which has helped cover his wife’s medical bills, as well as food and clothes.
Temwa’s Farmer Field Schools also teach them about manure and how to use this in Winter. With this, Enwood is prepared to grow maize, beans and sweet potatoes. He now feels secure and that his family will be able to become a business and have a variety of crops all year around.
‘I thank Temwa for allowing me to join the farmer field school as I know I have saved my family from hunger’
